Investors with their statement to Phuket City police today

Phuket Face Cream Cash Disappears: Woman Makes Off With Seven Million Baht

Thursday, December 11, 2014
PHUKET: A woman who deceived 17 Phuket people into investing in a cosmetic face cream business is now wanted by police over a missing seven million baht.

The investors went to Phuket City Police Station yesterday to seek action and to tell police how Khun Netwimon - only her first name was mentioned - invited everybody to invest.

One of the group, Chotticha Jampatong, 32, said the investors were encouraged by what Khun Netwimon said were initial successes to put in more money.

The face cream sold for 1400 baht and 250 baht of that was profit, according to Khun Netwimon.

Most of the investors upped their ante to 400,000 baht or 500,000 baht on the strength of the early success. And then Khun Netwimon just vanished.

Horrible profit margins, looks like it would have been a poor return on investment. There would have to be over 28,000 jars sold just to recoup the investment, not to mention operating costs, advertising, taxes, etc.

What were these 17 deceived people thinking? Who on earth want to buy a simple face cream for 1400 thb at 'street side'? Did no one of these 17 asked khun Netwimon for her business license? In Thailand everything is with license. Even for a portable radio on a bar counter the police comes to check the 'entertainment license'. No license? Than 9000 thb fine or 'we can settle under the table'. Know your drill!

As much as we all abhor thieves and cheaters, these nice ladies seem to have fallen into a good old Ponzi's scheme!
As Michael mentioned, this happens very frequently in Thailand.

Maybe the editor can get more information about this story:
* Did these ladies check the legal paperwork of their "friend" before investing in her business?
* Did they see the real stock and items?
* Did they meet any happy customers and get their feedback?
* Do they have any legal contract signed with her?
* Do they have her ID card and documentation?
If all these questions are answered by the negative, then these nice ladies have learned a very expensive lesson, but only have themselves to blame.

Mmmm now that I think of it... where did each of these young ladies get half a million baht to invest in the first place :P

Editor Comment:

You seem to be the only person blaming the victims, Lucien, which is shameful. There is no indication that all the investors were female. Perhaps you should look around. Many Thais are members of the emerging middle class and no longer poor.
