Phuket Expat Joe Blazy Arrested Over Visa: US Officials Likely to be Called In

Tuesday, October 21, 2014
PHUKET: US citizen Joe Blazy, a Phuket police volunteer and dive instructor, was arrested yesterday and detained in a police cell overnight because of a visa discrepancy.

He is due to appear in Phuket Provincial Court today.

Mr Blazy, 40, is one of Phuket's leading environmental campaigners and also a defender of the rights of the island's expats.

At the time of his arrest, he was campaigning strongly against pollution of the sea at Racha island and trying to prevent the importation of dolphins to a Phuket amusement park.

Friends of Mr Blazy were today trying to establish the exact circumstances surrounding his arrest. Mr Blazy was transferred by Immigration officers yesterday to Phuket City Police Station, where he spent last night in the cells.

It is believed Mr Blazy went to Immigration Headquarters in Phuket City yesterday to have his visa stamp renewed in a new passport.

However, because of delays incurred in the delivery of the new passport from the US embassy in Bangkok, his stamp was one day overdue, one friend told Phuketwan.

Officials from the embassy, due on Phuket for an outreach day for local Americans tomorrow, are expected to take an interest in the case.

Mr Blazy noted in a Facebook post on October 2: ''Boooo Thai Airways and your failing flight computers. My 7am flight turned into a 930am flight and now I have now missed my appointment at the US Embassy to replace my passport. Now my 1 day trip to the big mango has become 2.''

As well as being a Region 8 police volunteer, among Mr Blazy's activities was a campaign to make visa runs easier for long-term residents.

...The stamp was 1 day overdue.... And than influential thai people make he has to sleep in a police cell. Another blow to the thai justice system. NCPO, where is justice!

The exact circumstances surrounding his arrest are not difficult to understand, it's certainly not the one day overdue.

Racha Island is not under jurisdiction of the Phuket Governor. People have to understand that. Am I wrong? If so, show me the actions taken. Until now, nothing. Can I buy a thai island and be governor myself too?

How sad is this..

Joe obviously is concerned about Phuket and the environment on the Island..

Obviously rustled a few feathers, for this to happen, sad this happens if you voice your opinion...

Jumping to conclusions is likely to be a late additional event at the Asian beach Games on Phuket. There is no way of knowing the full circumstances and reasons. Best not to feed conspiracy theorists.

Sounds more like the three PPP's since you can renew your passport well in advance of any immigration due date plus adding blame to the airlines sounds more like it's Bushes fault to me.

Difficult, though, to renew if your visa if your passport is in the hands of the embassy. Honi soit qui mal y pense.

I think it would be better to wait with comments until the exact circumstances are known.

When I renewed my UK Passport I was told that no embassies renew Passports any more and all applications go back to the UK. I was only on a 30 day Visa Exemption at the time. There is a section within the application to write about special circumstances and a new Passport came back in plenty of time to avoid overstay and right to my home, no travelling any where and now I have a one year Visa. Well done UK.

In some ways Thailand is still reminding me to the midages.

Do you have an update of what has been happening for Joe Blazy?

Editor Comment:

We will have an update soon but deportation seems likely.

Does Thailand not have an article in the civil-law what can reduce this simple matter into "force Majeure".

Hm mm
"Thai 'Minitrue' Targets Farang 'Tall Poppies'"
If one was even slightly paranoid perhaps one would suggest that our beloved ed might "microwave" his reader comments on his server in the event that incarceration is imminent?

Does NO Update means; GOOD news, No News, or BAD news?

Joe is still likely to be deported, we hear. But being a public holiday today, difficult to get an accurate answer.

Deportation sounds a bit extreme for a stamp infringement. I would like to know the truth, " that will never be forthcoming from Thai authorities", before the worl and it's wife jumps to wrong conclusions. If we know the truth then we know what mistakes to avoid doing. Joe always tried to help people.

Joe was always trying to help but three overstays . . .

Thank you ED. So noted and understood. Naughty naughty Joe, you did know better than most people here, bye.

Is there any news on Joe?

Sad story but most of us were not there. Also, don't leave things to the last moment. Plan ahead, act ahead, and when something goes amiss, you still have time. Assuming nothing will happen almost makes it happen.

To all expats in Thailand.

When we stay in the Thai country, WE HAVE TO RESPECT the Thai laws and system,if not, we have to go back to our countries, who is much more tougher than the Thai laws...
