Phuket Expat Hits 'Return' as Laptop Burglars Come Clean

Thursday, March 10, 2011
CANADIAN Robert Kref is the luckiest man on Phuket. Thieves broke into his Rawai home on Tuesday and stole three laptops - and today he had the laptops returned.

Nine or 10 other expats in the Rawai area who have also been burgled recently may not be so lucky.

Chalong police got their lucky break on Monday when Anan Anakesap, 37, reported that his red Yamaha Fino had been stolen from outside his Rawai home.

Patrol officers spotted the Fino last night outside an apartment in Soi Thanutep and knocked on the door. A 14-year-old boy opened, Chalong officers said.

When asked about the motorcycle, he confessed to having stolen it. In the apartment were three laptops, a cellphone and an MP3 player.

As a result of their conversation with the contrite youngster, police went to a second apartment where they found the boy's 17-year-old brother and a 16-year-old friend. Outside the apartment was another stolen motorcycle, and inside were three more stolen laptops.

The three boys confessed to targetting the homes of expats in a series of about 10 burglaries in the region. They stole cash and electrical equipment and sold what they could, with laptops going for 2000 baht, the boys told police.

Robert Kref, 43, who has been living on Phuket for about two years, picked up his laptops today and was delighted with the prompt action of the police.

If you live in Rawai and you are feeling lucky, Chalong police have three more laptops of unknown ownership. The boys are headed for detention.

The names of under-age perpetrators cannot be revealed.

As a Chalong burglary 'victim' last year (laptop, camera, phone etc) - where is the market for laptops with English-only keyboards?
