Phuket Crime Down, Say Police, Promising Action on Taxis and Parking

Wednesday, January 1, 2014
PHUKET: Crime is down on Phuket with police becoming more active and taxi stands being made to abandon thuggery and drugs, senior officers said at a Patong new year display last night.

In a New Year message, Phuket Governor Maitree Intrusud urged Phuket to abolish corruption, adopt quality and a service mentality and impose international standards of behavior.

The importance of the security and safety of tourists and residents on Phuket was emphasised by the presence of Thailand's Deputy Police Commissioner, General Rachata Yensong, He said one major target for Phuket was to improve the flow of traffic.

He said that with many resorts fully occupied, officers on patrol were on the lookout for possible robberies, weapons and drugs. Police also needed to behave, he said.

''I don't want police to make problems for tourists,'' he said. When it came to buses and trucks on Patong Hill, Phuket's main link to Patong would be receiving extra attention, he said.

Region 8 Police Commander Major General Panya Mamen added that crime was being reduced on Phuket and that gangs from other provinces who had set up on Phuket had been shut down.

He said 125 of Phuket's 191 taxi stands had been checked for weapons and drugs and the process would continue. Police were serious in their intention of controlling illegal taxis, he said.

Kathu Police Station Superintendent Colonel Jirapat Palchanaphan said action had been delayed to free beach road parking space but the tuk-tuks would be tamed early in the new year.

Self complacency in thailand has all time been the way to hide incompetence, mismanagement and corruption amongst civil servants from the low-paid officers to the highest level up to ministry.

Will he stamp out the illegal seizure and ransoming of people's passports by the police as well? I looked up the words 'promise' and 'action' in my Thai-English dictinary- they could not be found.

To the "good' Governor and the Region 8 Police Commander, we have heard this story before, it seems the same story about crime is told over and over, but most of us expats know that little changes, yes, in the last week, we see stories of taxi drivers being "charged", most of us believe this is only a temporary thing, as is the usual way, we also do not expect to see these drivers actually face the courts or if they do, not spend time in jail and only a "token" fine. We are getting tired of the lack of sustained action, and see little reason to expect you, the authorities to do much, the only action we can do is to apply pressure to our respective Ambassadors, who can then bring, hopefully, sustained pressure on you. We hope 2014 will see a change in attitude.

It's sad! Today is the 1st day of January, all the police talk was of a clearing of the taxi's being the beach Road in Patong. Nothing is changed today, I tried to park there today and was told in no uncertain terms that I couldn't Park there as it reserved for taxi's.

Why as there been a delay in tackling the tuk tuks and taxi problem, when there are more police than ever stationed in Phuket.
Motor bikes still race along the pavements, parking everywhere and anywhere, Dangerous
Loma park is still a car park.
Where are the police, its a free for all in Patong
