Big Buddha foundation head Suporn Vanichkul with a truck being loaded

Phuket Convoy Set to Truck Tonnes of Aid to Flood Victims

Tuesday, October 18, 2011
UPDATE

The Rotary Club of Patong and five other Rotary groups raised 30,000 baht in floods aid in the space of two hours in a walk around Patong last night.

Original Report

PHUKET: A convoy of trucks will leave Phuket on Wednesday carrying tonnes of aid for people hit by Thailand's massive floods.

More help is being raised by Rotary and other charities. It's considered the least that Phuket people can do.

Memories of the aid delivered by the rest of Thailand to the Phuket region after the tsunami are still fresh, even after almost seven years.

Mama packaged noodles are running short in supply in some supermarkets on Phuket in the rush to send aid to people in Bangkok and other regions struck by the floods.

The sun is shining and it's perfect weather today on Phuket. Thailand's beach destinations have not been hit by the floods.

But what's being screened on television news services around the world reflects the real hardship and suffering in other parts of Thailand.

Bangkok's biggest test yet comes today, according to latest reports, when another surge of water hits the north of the city.

The aid from Phuket should be heading off Wednesday evening and be in the capital, ready to be distributed where it is most needed, late on Thursday.

Two trucks have already been loaded and a third was filling up rapidly today at the Clock Circle in Phuket City, where donations should be taken today or tomorrow.

Suporn Vanichkul, head of the Big Buddha Foundation, was in Phuket City today helping with the loading of the trucks, but the convoy is the result of a call for help through a number of Phuket charities.

Mostly the trucks carry bottled water, rice and packaged noodles, but anything that will help in the way of long-lasting food, clothing and bedding would also be eagerly accepted.

The numbers to call are 081 8913827 and 076 238470.

More aid will be coming tonight when Rotary Club of Patong Beach members walk from Jungceylon to Soi Bangla from 9pm on, collecting donations from Phuket tourists and residents.

People who would like to join the Rotary walk are invited to meet at Jungceylon, near Starbucks, at 9pm.
