Governor Nisit (right) greets a British envoy yesterday

Phuket Consuls May Meet Governor Soon: Tuk-Tuks, Beaches for Talks

Friday, March 20, 2015
PHUKET: British embassy officials met with Phuket Governor Nisit Jamsongwong for two hours yesterday to discuss the safety and security of tourists and residents.

The gathering at Phuket Provincial Hall included several senior officials whose roles cover regulations on land and sea.

The meeting was described later as ''very positive.''

It is now anticipated that the governor could meet all 23 of Phuket's honorary consuls as early as April 3.

Tuk-tuks, taxis and beach chair bans are expected to be on the agenda.

The governor took charge in October. If the April meeting proceeds, it will be his first meeting with the honorary consuls.

From recent experience it would seem unlikely any changes for good will come of it, but we can hope.

Intrigued as to how it was "very positive"

Are tuktuk fares to be reduced? Their monopoly abolished ? Their parking spaces to be freed? Is sense coming back to the beaches? Is corruption being removed? If not - what was positive about it?

@Rich

Indeed ! :-)

It's good they are talking again, but if no one is listening as usual then things won't change

Too many interested parties who like things just as they are !

If you look at it from the Thai perspective, what is the problem ? TAT has recently announced that arrival figures are up, that is the bottom line so everything is ok, the tourists like what Phuket has to offer. No thought about the spending power of the tourists of course, or of their behaviour,it is the numbers of tourists which is the benchmark.

The consuls have no one to blame but themselves when the local officials do not take them seriously. The consuls talk a lot, but not one has ever spoken with any authority or has had the support of his/her respective government to send a strong message. Why should the locals pay any attention to the consuls when their respective governments have refused to take decisive actions such as sanctions, when one of their nationals is killed or injured? The consuls talk a lot but do absolutely nothing in respect to preventing the abuses. The consuls meetings is for show and nothing else.

"The consuls talk a lot, but not one has ever spoken with any authority or has had the support of his/her respective government to send a strong message."

Ryan, how dare you, to spread such nonsense.

If you have no clue, you should better keep your mouth shut.

Do your homework, make some google research and you'll quickly see that particulary Mr. Naumann and Mr. Cunningham but the Chinese Consul too continued to adress the problems of Phuket. It was in the media, they sent this message to everybody who wanted to read it.

What do you think why this meetings not take place anymore? Because they are only show?

No, they hate it as the devil the holy water having to answer specific questions and provide concrete answer.
