The Phuket beach summit gets underway today

Phuket Beach Summit Underway: Governor Aims to Clarify Rules

Thursday, December 18, 2014
Today's Updating News Report

PHUKET: A large meeting aimed at clarifying what can and can't be done on Phuket's beaches got underway this afternoon at Phuket Provincial Hall in Phuket City.

About 100 representatives were attending from the Royal Thai Navy and virtually all councils and authorities across the holiday island. Some beach worker groups were also there, as observers.

Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong called the meeting and made two points:

.. by law people are not able to work in public areas

.. poor people need jobs but are not permitted to work in public areas.

The military government of Thailand cleared Phuket's beaches of sunbeds and umbrellas and vendors soon after taking control on May 22.

Illegal restaurants and beach clubs that had been erected along the shorefronts at Patong, Kamala, Nai Harn, Rawai, Nai Yang, Nai Thon, Laem Sing, Surin and other beaches were bulldozed.

Although there has been confusion, it's understood that tourists can bring their own umbrellas and chairs.

Subterfuges have been employed by vendors to continue to make money on the beaches without actually being caught.

The staging of weddings and the hiring of surfboards are among banned activities.

Despite the ban on private enterprise on public beaches, jet-skis and parasail speedboats continue to operate, for reasons that many vendors and tourists find difficult to understand.

Blah Blah Blah... rules shmools. It doesn't matter, because nobody follows rules, and there is nobody here to enforce them. This is just another dog and pony show where the poor whining beach bums will cry because they can't feed their families, and the Thai power brokers will tell everyone that they will look into it. Starting tomorrow, things will be no different. And for your rules... go see Kamala to see how well rules work. It is a complete farce...so don't expect anything.

OK, so from now on Mayors can not make false promises or make hope giving suggestions to thai people who were working on the beaches in the past. Right. They have now 2 options: 1, leave Phuket, go back home town. 2: Look for another job, with/without government re-education program.

So all the rental cars and bikes hogging the car parking at Patong Beach Road will be moved? That's public space at the beach for sure. And the jetskis and parasail operations run from the beach? That's public space as well. Neither of those groups are poor by any sense of the imagination.

Good - glad we have cleared that up then.

I hope the most important issue; Safety First will also be clarified. JET-ski's, spea boats, Parasails. BEST not. If yes in a SAFE way. All solutions now are dangerous and amateuristic. PROTECT & take care of your guests. Don't cut them into pieces. Up keep the laws. No license no driving. MOTORBIKEEP or Jetski's. Law is law. No more innocent victims.

I went to Nai Yang yesterday, the sand was dirty, rubbish in and on the sand, no bins, no people, no atmosphere. Not very inviting at all and yet it used to be a lovely place.

Totally agree with post by Ed Sanders.Blah blah blah. Everytime you clarify 'rules' no one believes anymore. No rules enforced except for cameras, jetskiis, parasails, clean beaches..

At anyone complaining about rubbish on the beach "TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME & DON'T EXPECT OTHERS TO CLEAN UP BEHIND YOU"

Editor Comment:

Surf lessons is an interesting one. It's categorised as a sport, just like the jet-skis.
