Phuket Bar Owner Mourned by Patong After Bike Crash, Life Support Turned Off
By Chutima Sidasathian Saturday, February 2, 2013
PHUKET: Tributes and farewell messages are being posted for Phuket bar owner and online forum pioneer Niklas ''Nicke'' Kring, who was killed in a motorcycle crash riding home this week.
Mr Kring, 42, a popular Swede and a father of two, is believed to have had life support switched off at a Phuket hospital on Thursday evening after a bike crash earlier in the week.
He lost control of his motorcycle riding home from Patong on Phuket's west coast after work to his house near Loch Palm Golf Course in central Phuket, a friend said today.
Bill Harris, who runs the Summer Breeze Hotel in Patong's Soi Sansabai, said: ''We were very close friends.
''Everyone who you speak to in Patong will tell you that Nicke was a fantastic guy. I can't tell you what a sad loss it is for Patong.''
Messages to Phuketwan say that Mr Kring established the Mai Tai bar in Patong's Soi Eric, off the Soi Bangla walking street.
''He ran the bar for about 10 years,'' Mr Harris said. ''We were very good friends. Nicke had a Thai wife and two daughters, aged seven and three.''
He also played a leading role in setting up the phuket-info.com site, where condolences were being sent today, and was well-known for his sense of fun.
The decision was made on Thursday evening to switch off life support at Phuket International Hospital in Phuket City because Mr Kring had suffered irreversible internal injuries, Mr Harris said.
''At this point everybody is grieving,'' said another friend in an email. ''His parents were also on Phuket. Nicke was very well known around town.''
Friends were today posting anecdotes that showed Mr Kring's sense of fun and deep affection for everyone around him.
Mr Kring's body is at Kathu Temple, where his funeral and cremation is planned for Monday.

This is shocking news. When I worked in Patong as a police volunteer, I'd often drop by his bar for a chat. He was a really nice guy!
Sad to say, but that's the second good friend from Soi Bangla bars who has lost his life in a bike accident :(

Shocked to read this very sad news about Nicke.
Checked the PhuketWan home page as I do almost daily when I am home here in England and saw a familiar blurry image disappear off my page as the news photos rotated. 'Oh no, that looks like Nicke' I thought.
Feeling so sad now, my condolences go out to his wife and family, staff and many friends at Mai Thai Bar.
I fly to Thailand next week and will be visiting Phuket later on my trip. I am sure that I will miss Nicke's welcoming smile and hospitality at Mai Thai Bar.
RIP Nicke!
