The coincidental carving of Patong sand castles that look just like sunbeds

Phuket Artistry: The Sand Castle on Patong Beach That Looks Like a Sunbed

Sunday, March 15, 2015
PHUKET: Can a sand castle possibly be illegal on Phuket's freshly-cleared beaches?

Here's the latest clever attempt to beat the Governor of Phuket's rule that sunbeds are not allowed on any of the holiday island's west coast beaches: the sand castle on Patong beach that just happens to look like a sunbed.

Now if in daylight a tourist happens to reward a beach boy with 200 baht for building a great sand castle, what could possibly be wrong with that.

Throw a towel over the sand castle, plant an umbrella in the sand and - bingo - suddenly it's unbelievably comfortable, just the way it was when the sunbeds and umbrellas ruled at all Phuket beaches.

These days, sunbeds are banned entirely.

So are beach chairs, even if swimmers choose to bring their own.

So are umbrellas outside of the ''10 percent zone'' that the governor has declared should be a compromise with vendors.

Of course, there can be no rules against sand castles, can they?

A Phuketwan correspondent encountered these beauties on Patong beach last night and a beach boy emerged out of the darkness, just to make sure nobody was planning to kick down his sand castles.

''Like them?'' he said. ''We have plans to build a whole row of them.''

Actually the sand castle ensemble Phuketwan would like to see includes a small sandy table alongside the sandy sunbed.

We have a feeling that too could be arranged, for a price. Once they make their pile, that will be the end of it.

Love the ingenuity. Can always rely on human nature to find a way. They say Aussies are creative, all Aussies will appreciate this. There soon, save me one!

Banning sand all together is the obvious solution to this new beach crisis.

Ha!... going to any length to keep from having to go get a real job. This method would certainly take too much work for the average cig-smoking beach bum. It would be a matter of time before he was covering up plastic beach beds to make accommodate his laziness. Oh... and just for the record, I personally witnessed a 350 pound tub of lard lay down on a towel at Surin, and he was even able to get back up...so I don't want to hear anymore about the poor people that have to have a bed on the beach.

Why don't they allow beds instead of the mats whilst adhering to the 10% rule?

Surely it's a better option.

"These days, sunbeds are banned entirely."

It's good those are banned. No more sunbeds or sunbed alike on the beach, thanks.

This is simply destruction of the beach.

All this is funny, childish an absolute not international beach worthy! Mind you, tourists spend a lot of money to fly and go to their beach dream location ( experienced before). Now tourists have to deal with this idiot sand castle deal? A fish has more brains. It is crazy, stupid and insulting.

Looking forward to seeing the sand shaped jet skis once they are eventually banned and built
down on the water line where the only damage will be from the wave good bye.

Brilliant idea, however there might be rules against to rewarding a beach boy to build on the public sand, but renting out a shovel and and an umbrella, should be perfectly legal. Can just wish that the jet-skis, which are parked on the sand all over Patong Beach will be replaced with sand models too.

how long before beach goers are not allowed to lay out a towel and rest their heads on their back packs ?

Sand is nicer than plastic here but using sand that way is again illegally pre-empting the beach at the expenses of the public.

If they were comfortable and didn't crumble (yeah, OK, big 'if'), they'd make an awesome gimmick for Phuket !

Surely a mining approval or licence would be required?
