Phuket Alcohol Ban Over Two Weekends as Island Votes for New Senator

Saturday, March 22, 2014
PHUKET: Advance voting for the election for a senator on Phuket next weekend means that all sales of alcohol across the holiday island are banned from 6pm tonight through until midnight Sunday.

The same applies throughout Thailand and the ban is repeated again next weekend when the actual vote takes place. So far 2014 has brought a series of alcohol bans for elections on Phuket and across Thailand.

Eight candidates have registered for the March 30 vote. They are:

1. Bamroong Rungruang
2. Chaiyot Panyawai
3. Songwuth Hongyok
4. Chaiyen Muangman
5. Manote Phanchalad
6. Cherdchai Wongseree
7. Cherdchoo Sae-Iaw
8. Nab Sinthong

Next weekend's poll will determine who replaces Thanyarat Achariyachai, who has completed serving a full six-year term as senator for Phuket.

A rerun of the February 2 national election, declared invalid this week, will bring another alcohol ban over two weekends.

We can drink alcohol from a 'tea pot' and the erection is valid?

Gee, I had to read this story a few times, I thought I had missed something because you comment made little sense. What I would like to know is where do you buy you magic tea pot, it could put Viagra out of business. Now, for all those drinkers, it's a ban on the sale of alcohol, not a ban on drinking.. stock up before the dates. This shows the stupidity of a ban.

Interesting.

I was at a bar last night with maybe 90 other people and alcohol was openly served - free of charge.

I wonder if alcohol sales are banned, is serving alcohol for free then allowed ? Entry was free for everyone too, no admission or any other coercive means to make customers pay were in effect.

It really was all free.

Editor Comment:

The ban is on the sale of alcohol, not on alcohol consumption. I guess you could even buy tickets in advance.

I've just had a thought, could be right or wrong, but the sale, of alcohol is banned, so, why not sell vouchers, before the ban, then during the ban hand over you voucher, at the bar, technically, you are not selling/buying alcohol that day.

i know all the stories about this and benn effected many many times by it and i dont need to say how stupid i think this is but maybe someone out there have more knowledge then me about the actual reason for it so it can give me peace in my heart and make any sense , what so ever coz right now it doesn't. and please dont just say that it suppose to keep the population sober so they go to take a vote. a good serious explanation pls...

Ok, that explains it then. I guess the thought of someone giving away alcohol for free never crossed the mind of whoever wrote this peculiar law.
