PHUKET: A daily wrap of Thailand news, with a Phuket perspective, plus relevant reports from national and international media. People on Phuket got another scare when a 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck at 4.44pm in Thalang district. At Central Festival Phuket, shoppers stampeded outside and gathered in front of the mall. Many tourists were seen running away from the beach. The Meteorological Department reported two smaller aftershocks at 8.30pm and 9.17pm in Thalang district of Phuket, measuring magnitude 2.7 and 2.6, respectively. Apart from Phuket, some other Andaman coastal provinces also felt the quakes. Minister of Science and Technology Plodprasop Suraswadi, said that the earthquake warning system was on the agenda as well as floods management although the tsunami warning system after the massive April 11 earthquake off Indonesia ''worked satisfactorily'' and resulted in effective evacuations in the Andaman region. Showgirls dressed as nuns performed a pole-dancing striptease for former Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi at a ''bunga bunga'' party at his luxury villa, a Milan court heard.

Bali has set an ambitious target of three million tourists arrivals, approximating a 10 percent improvement over the 2.75 million tourists who came to the island in 2011. Asean and the Asia-Pacific region produce 73.2 percent of all Bali's tourist visitors with Australia the biggest market share at 26.04 percent. The next morning we flew to Phuket, the famous beach area in southern Thailand. Although we found a few really good restaurants, I was overall pretty disappointed with Phuket. After seeing a few too many men and women overcrowding the beaches leaving little to the imagination, along with getting stung by something in the water, we decided to leave after an hour and a half and we didn't go back to the beach once in the rest of our four days. The traffic loggerhead in Patong remains a critical issue for development, especially if the southern headland area is going to position itself as the upscale neighborhood. A tunnel is badly needed and the island's infrastructure continues to lag private sector investment.

Asia Sentinel Don't imagine that restoration of Burma to normalcy and a degree of prosperity will be quick. Even under the most favorable local and external circumstances, it will take years to make up for four decades of decline and to rebuild the stock of human and physical capital that once made it the most prosperous, best-educated country in mainland South and Southeast Asia.
