Phi Phi Mystery Deaths: Lab Tests Continue in Thailand, Canada

Phi Phi Mystery Deaths: Lab Tests Continue in Thailand, Canada

Monday, July 9, 2012
PHUKET: Forensic scientists are still making laboratory tests on both sides of the world to solve the mystery of what killed Canadian sisters Noemi and Audrey Belanger on the Thai holiday island of Phi Phi.

A spokesperson at Bangkok's Ramathibodi Hospital told Phuketwan today that tests on tissue samples were still being conducted in the hospital's Forensics Department, where the initial post-mortem examinations took place last month.

The bodies of Audrey, 20, and Noemi, 26, were sent back to Canada soon after, and a second series of physical examinations then took place.

Colonel Jongrak Phintong, Deputy Superintendent of Police in Krabi, the Thai province that oversees Phi Phi, said today: ''We are still awaiting the results of the autopsy.''

Laboratory tissue tests to determine the presence of unusual substances or chemicals in bodies can take weeks or even months because they involve an extensive process of elimination.

The sisters were found dead in a room at the Palm Residence Phi Phi on June 15 and buried on June 30.

Family and friends attended a funeral in Pohenegamook, a small town 200 kilometres from Quebec.

Phi Phi remains a popular destination with 20-somethings, where snorkelling and sightseeing during the day is accompanied by a vibrant social scene at night.

The latest mysterious deaths appear to have had no effect on travel to Phi Phi.

The Belanger deaths mirror those of American Jill St Onge, 27, and Norwegian Julie Bergheim, 22, on Phi Phi in May, 2009.

Ms St Onge was cremated but Ms Bergheim's body was returned to Norway where a second autopsy that extended over a period of months failed to produce a reason for her death.
