Monday, May 3, 2010
PHUKET'S tuk-tuk drivers and taxi drivers - all 800 of them operating from Patong - were the first from today to receive jabs of H1N1 vaccine. The drivers are to be followed in the queue for injections by Patong's bar workers.

Tuk-tuk and taxi drivers have been made the first priority to receive jabs, which began to be injected from today at Patong Hospital.

Patong Hospital director Dr Phukin Siraphan aims to make sure there is no otbreak of H1N1 on Phuket. The most dangerous places for the spread of the virus are those where people gather.

The Public Health Ministry confirmed today that one person died from the virus last week, raising the total number of fatalities in Thailand to 32 this year.

Jabs are being given at Patong Hospital from 8am to 3pm. Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said that from January 1, the second outbreak of so-called swine flu had infected at least 7915 people. Even protesters at the red rally in Bangkok have been reportedly among the victims.

Mr Jurin said 1,090,208 people throughout Thailand had received the H1N1 vaccines so far.
