Tuk-tuk fares make drivers better paid than degree-qualified workers

Patong Tuk-Tuk Fare Maximums Set for Governor to Sign

Tuesday, February 8, 2011
NEW maximum fares for Patong tuk-tuks will become legal as soon as the Governor of Phuket, Tri Augkaradacha, signs the paperwork, a meeting heard today.

The meeting at Provincial Hall in Phuket City was told that 200 baht will be set as the maximum for trips around Patong - including to Kalim, the bay to the north of Patong - for as many as four passengers, with an extra 50 baht per passenger above four.

A fee for waiting time for tuk-tuks has yet to be decided. The rates are maximums and subject to negotiation downwards, the meeting heard.

Once the Governor has signed off on the rates, police will have the power to arrest drivers who ask for more than the maximums, the meeting was told.

The setting of maximum rates is unlikely to placate critics who say that high tuk-tuk fares are the biggest source of complaints from tourists.

After dark, the tuk-tuks have a virtual monopoly on transport for those who do not have a vehicle of their own.

In many cases, the critics say, tourists would be better off renting vehicles that are sometimes cheaper for hire all day than a single short trip in a tuk-tuk.

The new rates are as follows:

Thanks for the info .
I would like to see this published in the Bangkok Post or the Nation news web site so all Thais in Thailand can see what a rip off Phuket has become for transport.

RIP Phuket

I see that a 10 min trip from Patong-Kathu costs 350 baht in a busted up TukTuk whist a trip from Sukimvit to Suwanapoon airport in a new Totota corolla altis costs less than 250 baht and covers @ 50kms!!! Incredible, what a farce.

Lord Jim, you are correct, the fares should be printed in national newspapers. The tuk tuks control Phuket not the government or police. Very sad what is going on in Phuket. No way they can justify these high fares. Corruption is killing Phuket little bit by little. Greed is what it is.
The Phuket people deserve a real transportation system that will support locals and tourist at a fair and honest price.

May we negotiate upwards too...?
:-)
Those prices will be the cause for much more than 20,000 vehicles daily on Phukets streets!

That what I would call cementing the Rip-Off.

These rates are higher than an air-conditioned Taxi in Singapore. They are still way out of line for the type of transport.

So the rip-off has been made legal. A return trip from Patong to Mai Khao Beach, in a junk heap of a vehicle, costs as much as a budget flight from Phuket to Bangkok. It's kind of fascinating to watch a tourist destination commit suicide. Greed kills.

Yes, once more "thanks for keeping us posted, Phuket Wan".

As your report says, the new fares "are unlikely to placate critics". and carries the good advice that hiring a car may well be cheaper. Indeed!

Who would take a tuk-tuk from Patong to the airport when the price of an air-conditioned car is usually less than the 800 Baht quoted for a tuk-tuk?
Same for Patong to Karon and Kata. And so on.

Last time I took a hire car to Kata (during peak) the cost was 300 Baht one way. To Phuket International Hospital at night, 800 Baht return including 2 hours waiting.

Given 'the law of averages', it seems to me inevitable that car hire charges will soon rise to meet the maximum tuk-tuk fares. And then what?

The only positive is that the schedule should mean an end to the growing endless arguments, disputes and the like over fares and let visitors get on with enjoying their holiday and tuk-tuk drivers able to earn a fair wage etc, but I certainly do not believe for one moment this is the end of the matter.

For a start, it does not address that there are far too many tuk-tuks plying for trade in Patong. Something that does not seem to have been figured out by the 'Special Committee' is that the new fare schedule may have the unintended effect, however, of reducing demand and resolving that issue. Or just maybe, they realise that will be the 'natural' outcome of market forces. Maybe!

Overall, if anything underlines the urgent need for a public transportation system on the island, this surely is it!

IT does not matter were it is printed..it will never change..I and many like me have been listening to the same stories for the last 10 years..SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT..RIP PHUKET..

I wonder why one does not just hire a car at 700 baht per day and have aircon, than sit in an open tuk tuk, for a one way trip for 700 baht?
Down south of Trang, a half hour trip in a tuk tuk costs..... 20 baht.
Phuket you are killing yourself through utter greed.
Maybe the KB gang should terrorise the tuk tuks, then they can "own" Patong?

We've never heard that claim before. If you have some evidence for it, please pass it on to the police. If not, stop making it.
