Tesco underpass work due to start as Patong Hillslide is fixed

Patong Hill Sliding Lane Overtaken by Phuket City Underpasses

Thursday, September 19, 2013
PHUKET: Repairs to the ''sliding lane'' on the Patong Hill road clifftop should be completed before November and tourism's high season, say Phuket authorities.

The Director of Phuket's Road Department, Samak Luadwonghat, said work on the repair project - which involves shoring up the cliff face - was proceeding on schedule.

With preparatory work now underway on the Tesco Lotus underpass and construction of the Central Festival underpass 40 percent complete, Khun Samak is warning motorists to expect traffic delays.

''The police are trying to keep the bypass road traffic flowing as best they can on a day-to-day basis,'' he told Phuketwan.

''There are some local concerns about noise pollution, too.''

He said Phuket motorists would be well advised to take alternate routes and to avoid peak hour traffic if possible.

About 50,000 motorists use the bypass road each day.

A billboard suggesting alternate routes is expected to go up close to the Tesco intersection soon. Serious work will begin at the same time.

Khun Samak is on 'Mission Virtually Impossible'. There are few alternate routes available. Going through Phuket Town at rush hour is a nightmare. The coast road to Thalang is a hazardous route at best of times.

The roads are over crowded & badly congested with impatient drivers trying to make timetables. Yet still 'they' proudly announce more building projects & increased tourism. The island is sinking under the volume of traffic.

Drive on any road in Phuket and there are horde of drivers speeding, overtaking, accelerating towards accident black spots and jumping red lights. Every ones late but it's the foreigners that are culturally impatient. These road improvement will increase speed and lead to more accidents, deaths and maiming.

That's what they said about the arrival of the motor car, gee. Don't you think it's time to stop?

It will be nice to see the completion of the Patong Hill repair project as I'm sure everyone's sick of the sight of it by now. Was it reported the cost would be 17m baht? Let's hope it works.

@gee
"... but it's the foreigners that are culturally impatient." That's not my experience of driving on Phuket. It's not foreigners who cut down the inside lanes, overtaking and undertaking, shooting straight across to the far lane from U Turn intersections. There's more of "them" than there are of "us" but that's not the point of this article.

OMG another underpass?! Another digging that takes years to fill?

Patong's "normal" road between Jungceylon, Patong Hospital and the exit at Phrabarami road is taking 2 years to complete!
