Monk Caught on Phuket Stealing, Sniffing Glue

Saturday, July 6, 2013
PHUKET: A monk caught sniffing glue and pictured by a security camera stealing from a Phuket convenience store has been defrocked.

Residents near Wat Pra Aram in Thepkasattri Road, Rassada, alerted police to the monk's glue sniffing habits.

Officer kept an eye on the monk and when they were able to confirm the residents' allegations, moved in.

Intercepted at 9pm last night, Chaiyasit Janhtech, 33, said he had been a monk for six years and arrived on Phuket from Pattani on June 29 to visit friends.

He asked the abbot at the Phuket wat to stay for one night and when he failed to meet up with his Patong friends, stayed a little longer.

Security camera footage at a nearby convenience store showed the monk stealing 1000 baht and the wallet of a student whose parents run the store.

The former monk is likely to appear before Phuket Provincial Court on Monday.

Posted by Mal - So, all Monks are the same in Thailand? Do you also think all Business Owners in the west are the same? Does it surprise you that some do not earn the money Donald Trump earns?
Lol... Your comment shows your lack of thought.

@Nook, I thought all monks had to renounce worldly concerns and temptations? Or am I right in that these renouncement's can be turned off or on at will. Jet setting lifestyles, sex with underage girls, designer bags, owning super-cars and Harley motorcycles. These items should not even enter the thoughts, let alone the possession of these so-called monks. Monks do not seem to enjoy the reverence they once enjoyed. Quite a few bad apples have tarnished the good monks forever.

Editor Comment:

That's just not true, Duncan B. The vast majority of monks are admirable and will continue to be supported. Stretching one or two incidents into ''forever'' is ridiculous.
