Let's Add Street Stalls in Soi Bangla, Says Patong Entertainment Pres

Friday, October 2, 2015
PHUKET: Officials are considering a proposal that would add street stalls to the tourist walking mall that Patong's Soi Bangla becomes every evening after 6pm.

The plan to give visitors more bang for their baht in Bangla was put forward at a Patong municipal council meeting this week.

Weerawit Kuresombut, a councillor and President of the Entertainment Association of Patong, said he believed stalls along the footpath would add to the character of the iconic Phuket nighttime venue and give the island's visitors more to do while they were there.

''It's a walking street so the more attractions there are for people in Soi Bangla the better.''

Patong council is considering the idea.

The walking street remains contentious, with touts for lewd ping pong shows and time share holidays spoiling it for some.

At least one of the sois filled with small bars is being remade ready for the coming high season.

Patong veterans say rising prices and the opening of other entertainment venues elsewhere on Phuket has reduced the appeal that once made Soi Bangla unique.

Good idea - make Patong Patpong!

How about some original or innovative thinking for a change for the better?

Any room for the San Sabai parking lot?

Squeeze in the locals & squeeze out the tourists. It will at least LOOK busier (small advantage) but you know where this is leading already. The so-called night market will then become a 24-hr mess. Don't like the idea - sorry.

Bangla Street is during high season very, very busy normally. One can walk over the heads.
To block partly this evening pedestrian street with stalls is not a good idea for tourist safety..in case of panic ( shooting, disco fire, bar fights)
And more, the whole of patong beach road is already full with stalls. Is that not enough?

good thinking the Chinese customers who do not frequent Soi Bangla will go for food stalls... please keep them clean and safe......wm

Had that thought too, K Logic. Must be 15 years since I've gone anywhere near Patpong the stall(ed) street.

Can pretty much guarantee he did not run this stupid proposal past his members first, especially the owners of bars and complex's on front row who these stalls would be blocking.

And it is a stupid idea, already even in low season the various street acts regularly block the street for foot traffic, in high season it can become a nightmare getting from one end of street to another (and don't even want to think about new years eve).

Most members i know want less vendors, touts, acts so forth, not more

And simple fact, as shown by the 2 failing malls (Ocean plaza and bangla mall) already on bangla, people don't come there to shop

Since when has business been legal on public land?

A Juswunderin: Me too. It used to fascinate me watching them set up though. There was order to the apparent madness.

It's strange that Bangkok has got rid of many stalls to clear pavements for walking & here we have the opposite proposed.

@ Kurt and Logic. Did the person who proposed this idea, watch the news and video footage of the stampede in Tiger Disco when the fire started, or the stampede last week at the Haj in Mecca, or the bomb blast at Erawan in Bangkok?
Blow my dog with a feather, man o man this place is the creme del a creme of dimwit safety for humans and animals alike.
Thanks khun numbnuts.

My friends from abroad, 9 of them, were going to arrive here on 12th next week. Bango to that!
I leave here next week to join them on an Antartic expedition for three weeks instead.Who says you cant sunbathe and relax in frozen beauty? ( Sue any input?)
It will be a damn lot safer than here and cost less than a three week stay on Phukey in a 5 star rip off villa.

Logic,

of course you can - but you have to use good SunScreen, better water&ice-resistant.

There is new arrival in Boots, their private label is also sand-resistant, just try SPF 50(UVB) and maximum protection UVA.
Re-apply after every swim or icing, but at least every 2 hours(Boots needs your money, pls don't forget).

I guess you're going on the mission to lower global oil prices there?

Pls publish then also local beaches' landscape with no sunbeds, that ppl here would finally stop complain needlessly.

Good luck then!

Who is running away with the idea I approve of this daft idea? Quite the opposite - I hate stalls congesting my walking space, just as I hate touts.

@Sue: I simply do not have a clue what your references to sun screen & lower global oil prices refer to.

The lower oil prices has led to my premature retirement & 65,000 of my colleagues in the industry world wide paid off in the past 6 months. Why on earth would I want lower oil prices? If the benefits were passed on to the general public I might agree ... but they are not.

No stalls on Bangala Rd. Leave it the way it is because it is it is in a way an iconic part of Phuket, ping pong shows included. Ignore the touts and you will be fine.

street stalls on soi bazan seems to have killed the food sales for hemingways
