Janjua Mohammad Sherjil Saleem at Chalong police station

Kick-Boxing Norwegian Accused of Shoplifting

Sunday, March 7, 2010
A NORWEGIAN tourist accused of shoplifting has settled the case against him by paying 40,000 baht, the outcome of a mediation case.

Janjua Mohammad Sherjil Saleem, 33, was seen behaving suspiciously near the vitamin and muscle-building supplements at a pharmacy in southern Phuket on Wednesday.

Soon after he returned to the Notes Pharmacy in Viset Road yesterday, proprietor Piya Panapisom called the local police.

At first, Mr Saleem denied everything. He told police he was from Britain, then later said he was from Pakistan. Production of his passport eventually provided evidence of his Norwegian citizenship.

Police said Mr Saleem was a Thai kick-boxing student, studying the sport on Phuket for three months.

Other shop owners in the area also indicated that Mr Saleem had visited their shops and behaved suspiciously.

A security camera at the pharmacy captured evidence of what appeared to be Mr Saleem shoplifting.

In the interests of settling the case expeditiously, officers at Chalong police station negotiated a settlement that involved Mr Saleem paying 40,000 baht.

Supplements are indeed expensive, but that 40,000 baht that he just donated to the Old Bill's Fortuner fund would have bought him a lot of protein shakes.

So at home in Norway by the time he'd been to court, paid the fine and got a criminal record, would he be less out of pocket?

More power to the Whining Brigade - it's sooooooooooo unfair!!!

But did they have proof after the tape showed him "appearing" to be shop lifting? Why was he not arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law?

And who is that chick with the SWAT shirt on? Is there a SWAT team in Phuket? No less with a female sharpshooter?
