The boy is held horizontally so his hair can be freed at Phuket aiprort

Hair-Raising Aussie Escape from Grip of Phuket Airport Escalator

Wednesday, May 6, 2015
PHUKET: A 12-year-old Australian got his hair caught in the handrail of an escalator at Phuket International Airport last night - and escaped in time to catch his flight to Melbourne.

Moving down from Phuket's terminal one to terminal two, the boy apparently mistook the handrail for a headrail.

Staff saw what happened and quickly stopped the escalator in time before the boy lost any hair. Paramedics at the airport were able to remove his hair without permanent damage.

At one stage, they held him horizontally to dislodge his hair.

The boy was checked for injuries, interviewed by officers from Tachatchai Police Station, who patrol the airport, and allowed to catch his 10pm flight.

Australians have a growing reputation on Phuket for getting into mischief, either accidentally or deliberately.

Dear Ed

Love the picture!

Is that Mum on the right yelling: "This is where to keep your hair! ... Don't leave it in the escalator!!"

To be fair on the kid, it is so tempting to take a mini-nap while riding an escalator as the whole family rushes to catch an international flight. I am sure many of your readers have also been tempted to rest their weary heads in this way ... and get some attention as a bit of a bonus.

I wonder if his friends at school will see the story and picture? Is it true that the nurse was heard to say: "Stupid falang kid."

Ian Yarwood,

I agree, taking a mini-nap on an escalator looks so tempting!

Still, authorities should their job and install there pictogram signs comprehensively illustrating that No mini-nap for those with a longer hair, permitted!

Harry, you base your opinion on what evidence? Police reports, hospital records or over a beer in the Tiger Bar. Show me something to substantiate your post, please.

This article is at odds with one reported in another local newspaper. The other story mentions the boy getting his head jammed between the handrail and the wall; no mention at all of hair being caught in the handrail.

It's only a small point and I don't want to split hairs, but it just proves you can never believe everything you might read in the papers. Both stories can't be correct.

Editor Comment:

Indeed. The freedom of the media that Phuketwan is fighting for also enables others to get it wrong. Perhaps one day they'll thank us for it.
