GrabTaxi Revs Up Phuket's Taxi Fares

GrabTaxi Revs Up Phuket's Taxi Fares

Wednesday, September 30, 2015
PHUKET: In his farewell message yesterday, Governor Nisit Jansomwong encouraged people to use GrabTaxi to improve transport options across Phuket.

Governor Nisit told his final meeting with officials at Phuket Provincial Hall that illegal black taxi drivers and high fares in Phuket impacted on both tourists and local passengers.

Tourists were often overcharged for rides while local Phuket residents were often unable to get taxis outside the popular tourist areas, and in any case unable to afford them.

While 150 vehicles had registered with Phuket's GrabTaxi service so far, only 44 of those vehicles had passed all internal checks and were operating across Phuket.

Phuket's premium GrabCar service using higher end cars has 200 vehicles registered, but only 45 have passed all required checks.

Governor Nisit said the low number of vehicles passing the checks was due to local drivers having problems using the GrabTaxi application.

He said trainers from Bangkok would be coming to help Phuket drivers soon.

Governor Nisit said he hoped that most black taxis would change over to GrabTaxi in the next one to two years.

Authorities believe that the smart phone application-based service is the means to achieve a subtle taxi ''revolution'' on the holiday island.

The GrabTaxi service started in Phuket on July 20 this year, and the Phuket Provincial Land Transport Office sets rates.

The strength of the GrabTaxi service is that passengers are able to obtain an estimate of the fare cost at the time of booking.

Meter flagfall rate is 50 baht, however if there is a traffic jam and the taxi cannot move at more than 6km per hour, the meter will charge one baht a minute.

Passengers are charged a booking fee of 30 baht that covers the driver's expense in going to the pick-up point.

Drivers only start their meters when a passenger is inside the vehicle.

Pick-ups from Phuket International Airport require advance bookings and incur an airport surcharge of 100 baht on top of the booking fee.

GrabTaxi recommends passengers make a booking 15-20 minutes before your preferred departure time ''due to the small fleet of taxis'' currently operating in Phuket.

Would-be passengers can download GrabTaxi for free via App Store, Google Play Store and Blackberry World.

When the Phuketwan closes down do you think there will be a job for a smart arse like you about ed ???
I do not think so,
you just use this job to be negative and of course a smart arse !!!
You will never make it in the real world as you spend too much time trying to correct people,
If you used that approach with me face to face then you would get a good belting !!

Well, that would prove how much more intelligent you are than me, Greg, wouldn't it? Quite a few Aussies think that way, don't they? You know - beat all the women, kill all the kangaroos. The world sees what a great example you set.

Greg, You're an idiot. If you hate the site so much why do you keep coming here?

Ed, No need to besmirch the character of the rest of Australia. That's exactly the kind of broad brush bigotry you are usually quick to stamp out. Having said that I hope you keep Phuketwan going, I've really enjoyed reading your artciles over the years.

After I read your nice article I thought it was a good thing going and may be a new approach to really increase the service level at a reasonable price in the public transportation sector of this wonderful island. So I immediately downloaded the app and tried it out. I live in Kathu close to Loch Palm and wanted to go to Patong. So normally a quite short ride. The app told me the estimated fare would be 355 Baht!!! If you call that Phuket's Taxi fare and Service revolution than we might a have a different view on at least what a price revolution is.

I have just downloaded the app, it looks great you can see where the nearest car is to you and the price before confirming.
Chalong pier to the airport 650 baht
Chalong pier to kata noi 325 baht. definitely a step in the right direction but still not Bangkok prices lets hope we get many more in the future

What happened to Uber? I used Uber a few times in Phuket and also Bangkok. After a while, it seems there was no cars in Phuket. Is this the case?
