Ambassador to Britain Pasan Teparak has been recalled to Thailand

Envoy Recalled from Britain as Thailand's Coup Command Readies for Protests

Thursday, May 29, 2014
PHUKET: Governors in all provinces were being advised tonight to prepare for anti-coup protests on Sunday as Thailand's ambassador to Britain became the first envoy to be recalled.

The coup command staved off potential protests around Victory Monument in Bangkok today when police trucks for prisoners were parked at the traffic circle and protesters were invited to take a ride.

All of the anti-coup protests in Bangkok so far, involving up to several hundred people, have been rowdy at times but dealt with peacefully.

Tonight, the governors of Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga and Thailand's other 74 provinces were advised to prepare for potential anti-coup protests on Sunday.

Governors have been told to inform residents to follow the rules of the coup, imposed a week ago when General Prayuth Chan-ocha took control of Thailand.

The governors are to work with the Army's Internal Operations Security Command, police and local administrative organisations in creating a blue print for dealing with protesters.

Reports on incidents are to be supplied to the Interior Ministry.

Tonight came reports that Thailand's Ambassador to Britain and Northern Ireland, Pasan Teparak, is being recalled to Bangkok and may have to report to an Army base.

It is believed he may be a supporter of fugitive former Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra. Supporters of Khun Thaksin have been among targets for apprehension and brief detention.

More than 200 political leaders from both sides of politics in Thailand have been detained for between three days and a week at Army bases or safe houses. Nearly all have since been released on condition the people involved do not participate in politics.

Others who have failed to report as ordered by the National Peace and Order Council now running Thailand are liable to face military courts and severe penalties.

An early national election is not likely until the divide in Thailand is healed to the point where civilian rule can be restored, a coup command spokesperson told Reuters.

Today the junta leaders met to discuss ''big ticket transport infrastructure'' for Thailand, including the expansion of Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok and a high speed rail network nationwide.

Consultants were given two weeks to examine the core issues and report back.

The fast food McDonald's chain has asked protesters to stop adapting its advertisements or other images for use as protest signs.
