Phi Phi, about 40 minutes from Phuket by ferry, is wild after dark

Deadly Riddle of Phi Phi Expat With Broken Neck

Wednesday, March 2, 2011
UPDATE

MARC KAECH, 35, died after collapsing at the guesthouse where he was staying, and the injuries he sustained came in his fall or as a result of his Thai boxing training on Phi Phi, Phuketwan has learned. Mr Kaech was found unconscious and taken to Krabi Hospital, where he died. Police provided the initial information that his body had been found at sea.

Original Report

THE BODY of an expat man has been found in the sea at Phi Phi - with a broken neck and showing signs of battery with a blunt object, say doctors who performed an initial examination.

The body of the man was found in Tonsai Bay about 5pm yesterday, dressed only in a pair of shorts.

An initial examination revealed that his neck had been broken, and that he had been struck with a blunt instrument. It is believed the man, aged 35, had been in the water for three days, police said.

The man is a Swiss national. Phuketwan has his name but is withholding publication until relatives have been informed.

His body has been carried from Phi Phi to the mainland and is now in Krabi Hospital. Police from the mainland were on their way to Phi Phi today to begin an investigation.

Phi Phi has a growing reputation for unrestrained night life and beach bars where violence is more common now than it was before the 2004 tsunami.

...where violence is more common now than it was before the 2004 tsunami.

are you suggesting that the two things are somehow related?

Editor Comment:

No, only that the tsunami is the marker between the old Phi Phi and the rebuilt Phi Phi.

I hope that the police can get to the bottom of this one. RIP.

I didn't realise you were that way inclined, PhuketKop.

Condolences are of course proffered to the family of this unfortunate Swiss gent.

It's not just Phi Phi - corruption, murder and all manner of crimes are on the increase.

Watch tourist numbers fall as police continuously fail at their duties.

How do you know, Graham? I'm not sure that statistics bear that out. What we do know is that the Australians' stabbings and the claims by the British woman of a possible rape by expats and Thais won't be recorded in the statistics because the victims chose not to pursue the cases. Police can't be blamed for that. The vast majority of tourists come and go, and enjoy their holidays. Don't get it out of proportion: Phuket doesn't suffer from serial killers or madmen on shooting sprees.

"Phi Phi, about 40 minutes from Phuket by ferry"

That must be some streamlined ferry!

I have done this trip many times (in both directions) over the last 20 years. Most trips have taken between 2.0hr - 2.5hr, depending on sea state. The best time I have managed by ferry is 1.5hr.

Sorry PW Editor,
I think the 7 deaths of westerners in 7 weeks in Andaman region two years ago has not been addressed. Errant poisonings and a strangling, and two in the water..? 4 ill, 2 dead mystery on Phi Phi, w exact symptoms on two in Phuket.

Chaing Mai - 2 (or 3 ? ) incidents last month.
