A daily wrap of Thailand news, with a Phuket perspective, plus relevant reports from national and international media.

bangkokpost.com Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has indicated an early House dissolution is likely to be called later this month or early next month to clear the way for the general election, a highly-placed coalition source said.

thewest.com.au There is a growing chorus of concern around Adrian Troy, 47, who has not been seen since late December when his vessel was detained by the Eritrean Navy at the port of Massawa after an alleged dispute over fuel. Mr Troy, a British-Australian based on Phuket, was part of a six-man crew aboard the Sea Scorpion for Private Vessels International, a specialised British security firm that helps merchant ships safely navigate the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.

reuters A British diplomatic team, which is reported to have included special forces soldiers, left Libya after being captured by rebels in the eastern town of Benghazi.

guardian.co.uk The saga of eight British "diplomats," who flew into eastern Libya to make contact with rebel forces, turned rapidly into a Dad's Army-style farce. David Cameron, who personally authorised the mission, faced embarrassment when the Libyan authorities released intercepted phone calls which showed the operation had a distinctly amateur feel to it.

scmp.com Major China cities were under heightened security yesterday, as authorities were put on high alert by online calls for "jasmine" rallies for a third Sunday in a row.

aap Rising fuel prices and a more environmentally conscious society are expected to increase demand for turboprop aircraft in the years ahead, an aircraft manufacturer says.

kanglaonline.com Bangladesh has experienced a small but regular infiltration of Rohingya Muslim refugees from Myanmar in recent months. They speak of terrors being unleashed on them by Burmese troops as in 1988 with the aims of completely flushing the Arakn clean of Rohingya Muslims who have been living there for centuries and should be treated as full Myanmar citizen like the others.

afp Last year's coral bleaching event has given scientists a chance to test theories of resilience and see which kinds of reefs, under which circumstances, are best suited to adapt to warmer seas. "In Aceh about 90 percent of the coral bleached, and that included some of the really big varieties that are hundreds of years old and had survived the (2004) tsunami but died because of the bleaching," said Joanne Wilson, deputy director for science in TNC's Indonesia Marine Program.

mirror.co.uk Staying at Katathani on Phuket, you quickly slip into a different way of life. We were only there for six short days but it felt like three weeks, the sign of a good holiday in my books.

afp The unbridled manufacture and use of pesticides in Asia is raising the spectre of "pest storms" devastating the region's rice farms and threatening food security, scientists have warned. Increased production of cheap pesticides in China and India, lax regulation and inadequate farmer education are destroying ecosystems around paddies, allowing pests to thrive and multiply, they said.

smh.com.au At $310 a person plus wine, it's up there with the world's most expensive dining experiences but chef Tetsuya Wakuda has no shortage of customers at his new Singapore restaurant. To the Sydney chef's amazement, the reservations book at Waku Ghin includes many Australians, especially from Perth, who are travelling especially to eat at the 25-seater. The restaurant uses three kilograms of caviar a week.

@ed: As we all are online posers, I ordered myself an avatar, just to find out that your Gravatar service has a problem with some email accounts, like mine (mail.ru). But yahoo mails does the trick...

If anyone is interested, my avatar shows Thailand best actress ever and a pretty poser also... I had to cut myself out of the picture...

And as the first time doing this Gravatar thing is a little pain, I like the outcome, seeing Asterix and a nice sun-going-down-at-beach. And would like you fellas, do try it also.
