She had to alert them as there never watching their charges in the first place what do they do have a card game after people are in the water or some other recreational activity? multiple drowning deaths of Chinese on snorkeling tours being from a landlocked country they dont know the rudimentary's of swimming whatsoever in most cases being highly overrepresented in snorkeling tour fatality's yet the tour guides take no heed and the body count rises.

I was on the same boat sitting just aside the victim that day. The guider and his crews had done what they could do to rescue him, but it take a little long time to find him. Peace be with his family.

AGAIN - Nothing ever changes so sad. Every year so many drown, seems mainly Chinese. What is Thailand and China doing to stop this? I don't know why I care I left Phuket for reasons like this.

If the person went down means he was not wearing a lifejacket, the crew should be responsible enough to ensure customers wear the jackets before jumping out to water?

Editor Comment:

It's quite common for Chinese to drown wearing lifejackets, Deepak, on snorkelling trips. The problem is that an untrained person with their face underwater doesn't realise they have a problem and doesn't show normal signs of distress until it's too late, which is why constant vigilance needs to rapidly become standard on Phuket. At present, saving tourists' lives is not valued highly enough.

I was in Israel last month and there they have lifeguards standing on surfboards with paddles with all the swimmers between them. In Israel the safety is of a far higher standard having spent years in Thailand it is quite refreshing to sea. Even as soon as an elderly man moves outside the zone they called him to come back.

Great idea. Speedboat guides should learn how to use standup boards. That would also keep them busy and concentrating, too.

Why do I remember the words often spoken on Phuket - "You want you pay" - all comes down to greed there is no money in saving people by prevention therefore it won't be done in many cases. Law enforcement is very low in marine safety in Phuket.

Ed - "The problem is that an untrained person with their face underwater doesn't realise they have a problem and doesn't show normal signs of distress until it's too late"

Come on, Ed - that's the kind of conjectural nonsense you chastise your readers for coming up with. Best leave your pathological noodlings to the experts.

Editor Comment:

That is precisely what the experts say, sid vicious.

Ed- What experts? You just made that bit up. - The correct response would have been "You are quite right Sid, I have no idea how this guy died, and I should not be making assumptions"

Editor Comment:

We don't make assumptions, sid. We leave that for commenters. Your reaction to my comment proves that.

Ed- you mean my reaction to your assumption?

Sorry sid, foolish questions are also something we avoid or ignore. Any comment I make is based on a knowledge of the topic. Yours is . . . well . . . yours.
