A dramatic rescue in Patong saves man buried alive in landslip

Three Buried Alive in Phuket Landslip: Rescue Photo Special

UPDATE: Rescue Drama Photo Album ABOVE

Killed in the Patong landslip was Santi Lipornket, 49. Heed Inntong, 72, and Pichit Sititaruno, 40, were being treated at Patong Hospital after being dramatically rescued. Police were questioning Suwit Seksom, owner of the property.

Original Report

PHUKET: Rescuers were desperately digging to save two men buried alive in a landslip that killed a third Phuket worker at a building site in Patong this afternoon.

The men were buried at least waist-deep by the landslip at 3.39pm, according to initial reports. The dead man was crushed by the weight of the earth, initial reports said.

All three men remained buried as the rescuers struggled to free the two living workers, according to first reports.

Patong Deputy Mayor Chairat Sukban, on his way to the scene, confirmed there had been at least one death when the earth slipped at a site off Har Sip Bee Road, in the Patong foothills.

Landslips and wall collapses have been a feature of construction on the Patong hillside, often resulting in death or injury.

Conditions grow even worse in wet weather.

Here we go again - greed over safety. Anyone who granted building permits to construct along the hillside needs their qualifications questioned. Once the hill is full of buildings where will the water go? Unfortunately the loss of life has no effect on 'progress' - RIP to the casualties.

It hasn't rained for weeks - so that's not the cause.

Greed, from landowners and/or developers and/or unprofessional or corrupted administration / authorities is a lot to blame for Phuket's "destruction".

Who approved these construction plans? Who gained from it?

Bangkok Help. You, Bangkok, let the local authorities destroy an important "Rice bowl".

The responsibility lies with the construction company and no one else, they must provide a safe work place for there workers, if they followed correct excavation procedure this would not have happened.

I believe the tench he was working in was 2meter deep and caved in so not really a landslide .
Life is cheap for these poor buggers
RIP

Editor Comment:

The photographs quite clearly show that the men were working at the base of a chiseled cliff, intended eventually to be reinforced with a rock wall, when the cliff face collapsed.

3rd world building technique kill yet again, how many of these land slips have we had in the past 12 months in patong, does any government body or official in patong check up on these sites and their shocking building practises or would that be to much to hope for.
