Bomb Kills Yala Vice Governor, Blows Apart Deep South Peace Talks Hope

Friday, April 5, 2013
PHUKET: The Vice Governor of a Deep South province and another official were killed in a roadside bombing today that may have put an end to planned peace talks.

Yala Vice Governor Isara Tongtawat died in hospital while Yala Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation chief Chaiwalit Chailerk was killed on the spot.

The driver of the vehicle was fighting for his life today in an intensive care unit.

The men were travelling between Yala and Betong to open a One village one product festival (Otop) when the bomb exploded beside their vehicle about noon.

Talks recently in Kuala Lumpur between some participants in the insurgency and Thai officials failed to produce any clear path to peace.

More than 5000 people have died in the struggle between Thai officials and insurgents in the provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani.

My condolences to the families.

This is very disappointing news. It proves that it is near impossible to mediate with wanton terrorism.

I work in Nigeria & the government here has the exact same problem with the Boko Haram terrorists in the north, who likewise have embarked on a campaign of fear, indiscriminately killing doctors, NGO personnel, teachers, students, Christians, government officials, police officers, army personnel, etc. The list is endless.

There is no obvious solution & no end in sight. Sad times.
