The bomb scene in Sukumvit 71: one man was seriously wounded

Bangkok Bomber Entered Thailand Through Phuket, Say Police

Tuesday, February 14, 2012
UPDATE

Israel's ynetnews.com reported Police General Bansiri Prapapat as telling Reuters: ''We discovered the injured man's passport. It's an Iranian passport and he entered the country through Phuket and arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport on the 8th of this month.'' Initial reports indicated he flew to Phuket from Seoul, South Korea, Associated Press added.

Original Report

PHUKET: Two blasts rocked a section of Bangkok today, reportedly badly injuring a man with his own bomb.

The man appeared to have been badly wounded, early reports said, his legs apparently ripped off. The two bombs on Sukhumvit 71road in the Thai capital at 2.46pm wounded five people.

The Iranian was Chayab Morabi, 50, officers said.

Thai television stations reported the wounded man was carrying the explosives. An identification card found in a satchel nearby indicated he was Iranian.

The Bangkok Post reported that the man severely injured himself when he threw a bomb at Thai police and it ricocheted off a tree, exploding as it bounced back towards him.

Earlier reports suggesting that a taxi driver had been killed were incorrect.

Thailand has rarely been a target for foreign terrorists, although a domestic Muslim insurgency in the south has involved bombings of civilian targets.

Well, people were warned about a bomb in Thailand, and Thailand said they were on it. Well I guess they missed this one.
Sorry for the death and injuries of the innocents.

Don't want to jump to conclusions so quickly. Terrorists or not? But I will listen to the US and Israelis before the mai pen rai attitude from Thai officials.

Last month a Lebonese man with alleged connections to hezbollah is held in Bangkok connected to a warehouse full of bomb making components. He has since admitted that they had called off their "plan" once authorities became aware of it.

Today an Iranian man 'accidentally' blows himself up in Bangkok while tossing bombs at a taxi and a policeman. He was linked to a house in that area, where two other Iranian men lived (one of whom was caught at Soovieboom awaiting a flight to Malaysia), where bombs were apparently being made. Iran is a main backer of hezbollah.

Could it be merely coincidence?

It is so sad that other people were injured.

I wish this Iranian man had killed himself in the bombing, yet on a lighter note, we will not see him running around will we?

I remember commenting a week or so ago, on my belief that the US intelligence agencies had perhaps a better handle on the terrorist situation in LOS that our esteemed police. How many people die in the south every week? How many people are brought to justice for murder and terrorism?

So, is the expectation that people, be they residents or visitors, have faith in the Thai security agencies ability to provide protection?

RIP? Who died? I read "The man appeared to have been badly wounded, early reports said, his legs apparently ripped off. The two bombs on Sukhumvit 71road in the Thai capital at 2.46pm wounded five people. "

Editor Comment:

The taxi driver was reported killed in an earlier, incorrect report.

Iran exports drugs, bombs, terrorists, and soon atomic bombs. Quite the model for the Islamic world.

I must admit that I also get very upset when taxis don't stop for me, however this is a salutary lesson to always keep 30 baht in your breast pocket.

Of course it should be viewed at face value. Its got nothing to with a certain country wanting to extend its influence in SEA. The fact that huge reserves of gas and oil have been discovered in the gulf of Thailand. Neither is there any connection with any foreign intelligence services, just like there was no connection with them for the 7/7 attacks in London. Luckily we have friendly nations, with no self interest to help us at our hour of need and we have those shining example of Kuwait and Iraq to give us that comfort feel. There is such an obvious motive for the Iranians to hit Bangkok :) What route did our bomber fly Tehran, Virginia Seoul Phuket :)
