Aussie Expat Found Dead at Phuket Home Suffered from Illness

Friday, June 26, 2015
PHUKET: An Australian expat was found today hanging in the chicken coop near his Phuket house in what police believe was a suicide.

The man, aged 64, had told his Thai wife that he suffered from a personal illness that was causing him some pain.

The 45-year-old woman left the three-storey house on the Sarkoo-Airport road to Nai yang beach to take a young relative to school about 7am.

When she returned to the house about an hour later, she could not find her husband, said an officer from Tatchatchai Police Station.

''She went looking for him and found him hanging from a nylon cord in the chicken coop,'' the officer told Phuketwan.

The woman said that her husband had been behaving normally and gave no indication he was planning to kill himself. They had been together for 10 years, she said.

Phuketwan has seen the man's Australian passport but is withholding publication of the man's name until relatives have been informed.

People feeling depressed on Phuket are advised to talk to family or friends about their problems, or consult a doctor.

As usual, quickly the police 'believe' things, not disturbed by any solid facts or/and knowledge.
It becomes disturbing that police is not equipped to investigate properly first before they go public for their moment of personal fame to publish their ' case thinking'.

Isn't it reasonable for the police, who have been to the scene, to express a view? We are grateful that police take the time to convey the results of their investigations. Photographs support the police account. There is no coronial system in Thailand. Do you really want nothing at all revealed about all deaths? Being negative about everything will inevitably lead you into darker places, Kurt. We don't want to join you there.

So the Police can spend so much time and money tracking petty thieves who steal an Ipad which should have been out of site anyway in a car, this is common sense but when someone dies that's the end of it. Frankly I am not more surprised there are not more deaths here as mainly they are ruled heart attack or suicide. Thais steal every day here but how come your newspaper only prints about a group of farang stealing, Ed you need to accurately portray life here not just massage your own ego. Be a professional journo or don't bother. Please don't harp on about how much you provide free news. That is your choice!

Hello Not Really Concerned, Our interest is in improving the circumstances of all people on Phuket. That includes residents, expats and tourists. We focus what limited resources we have on the areas where we can do most good. If you want to learn more about the activities of Thais, I suggest you learn to read Thai and follow the Thai media. Thieves operate everywhere, Not too Concerned, so unless there is some special reason, we wouldn't cover everyday incidents of the kind that occur around the world. You are free to choose what you read and where you read it. Developing an understanding is something we can't help you to achieve. I don't have an ego so massaging is not necessary.

What the hell are you two on about. Kurt doesn't seem happy unless the editor reports that an apparent suicide was actually a murder plotted by who knows who for no identifiable reason with absolutely no evidence to support the conclusion. And Concerned is posting some incoherent rambling suggesting PW doesn't report Thai crimes just Farang crimes?? A quick look through a few issues of this newspaper will show you numerous reports of Thai crimes. And "massaging his own ego"??? What a load of unsubstantiated rubbish. I have no problem with people voicing their opinions or criticising editorial content but first you have to have something to criticise. This article is simply reporting the fact that some poor man was found dead and the evidence found by the police points clearly to a suicide. Stop turning it into a conspiracy theory or using it to defame the reporters. What sad lives you guys must have that all you have to do with your lives is read a paper you don't like so you can criticise the content and the people who write it.

Thanks, pete59. You should read the unpublished responses. This is my favorite, from a regular contributor who never has a single idea in his or her head. Always good for a belly laugh. Amazing that people actually waste their time with this tripe:

@ed.."I don't have an ego so massaging is not necessary"..
Morisen you are so full of s***, its a wonder you can walk!!..You, yourself are the most egotistical ponce i've ever seen..

This unfortunate man has been named elsewhere and is stated to be British.
Did your reporter really sight an Australian PP?

Do you think we would write that we've seen his passport if we haven't seen his passport? I've seen a photograph and it's clearly an Australian passport. But he was born in Bootle.
I hope you are asking your alternative source whether they've seen his British passport, and whether British envoys had confirmed his family had been notified before publication of his name.

Friends of the deceased have stated elsewhere that he is British, indeed a scoucer, and another news source said the British authorities have been notified. Perhaps he has dual citizenship.
I don't support the release of people's personal details in the media before relatives have been notified, but have no plans to start a campaign against all who do so. Thanks for the suggestion.

He was clearly Bootle-born. I am not sure that it's permissible to carry and use both British and Australian passports. Usually, British citizens who take on Australian nationality only get to keep their accents. British or Australian, every death is sad. It would be interesting to know which of the two embassies actually contacted his relatives.

This man was a close friend of mine. He was born in the UK, but emigrated to Australia many years ago. He was still a 'scouser' at heart. RIP.

Editor Comment:

That makes him an Aussie scouser. My grandfather was also born in Bootle. Thanks for clearing that up, Simon. Passports don't lie. He was due to remain an Aussie at least until 2022. RIP.

Who can tell why you confuse the online world of anonymous commenters with real life, James, but your lame insults and lies have absolutely no effect. And if your aim is to have me read what you've written, rest assured: I won't read your bleats from now on.

Brits don't lose their citizenship when they take out Australian citizenship.
There are many thousands of these dual citizens out there.
