Phuket Region 8 Police Headquarters begins with a wall in Mai Khao

Phuket Still Has Chance of Gaining Extra Police

Thursday, August 20, 2009
A WALL now going up in Mai Khao alongside the main road marks the beginning of the transfer of Region 8 Police Headquarters to Phuket.

''The move will eventually give Phuket an extra 400 police,'' Major General Decha Budnampetch, a former Phuket Police Chief, told Phuketwan.

The major general is now deputy chief of Thai Royal Police, region 8, in Surat Thani.

Major General Decha said 185 rai had been set aside for the complete 200 million baht project and the first arrivals on the site would be the Science Police of Phuket.

The budget has been obtained for two buildings that mark the beginning of the more extensive project.

Some local people, living on the land without permission, have been given 40 days to vacate.

''We have negotiated with them and been as helpful as we can,'' Major General Decha said. ''There is no timetable yet for the major part of the project because the budget has yet to be allocated.''

A large local cemetery lies on 10 rai alongside the police site.

Part of the cemetery is occupied by the Tsunami Wall of Remembrance, a tribute to the dead of 40 nations, close to the site where a facility once stood where forensic scientists from all over the world identified hundreds of victims.

The wall has, as usual, fallen into disrepair between tsunami anniversaries, when fresh flags and flowers are usually added.

Scores of remaining nameless tsunami dead were carried off the island by night in 2006 in a container convoy, with an escort of Tourist Police, for burial in Phang Nga.

Establishment of the Region 8 Headquarters is just beginning as two other large police building projects continue in Yaowarat Road, Phuket City.

The new island Police Headquarter is now being fitted out ready for opening later this year.

A few metres along from that building is the new Tourist Police Headquarters, where construction appears to be proceeding rapidly.

Completion will enable the Tourist Police to move from the current rented premises in the bypass road.
