Phuket at its serene sunset best: Kata during the King's Cup

Phuket's Star Regatta Pushed by 100m Baht Breeze

Tuesday, November 16, 2010
PHUKET'S economy is expected to benefit by more than 100 million baht from this year's Phuket King's Cup Regatta.

Asia's largest sailing event will begin off Kata Beach on December 4 with eyes already turning towards 2014, when Phuket will hold the 2014 Asian Beach Games, with sailing among the 20 sports.

Lessons learned from the staging of this regatta and 23 previous regattas are likely to prove useful. With 64 nations expected to be involved, it will be Phuket's chance to shine on and in the water.

Before the 2014 Games, more regattas will be sailed. The 2010 King's Cup already has one record to beat with 111 entries and participants from more than 30 countries competing in 2009. So far, so good.

There are 97 entries already from all continents, with strong showings from Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand.

A survey of those planning to attend has proved the resilience and appeal of Phuket as an attractive place for sailing at its best. Most of the respondents have been to Phuket five times or more, underscoring Phuket's popularity as a marine tourism destination.

The equivalent of a grassroots initiative has allowed young sailors for the first time this year to take part in a Phuket Dinghy Series, promoting the next generation of sailors. Youngsters from all over Thailand will take part in the Optimist Class at this regatta, another first.

After registration and an opening party at the Kata Beach Resort and Spa to celebrate HRH the King's birthday on December 5, racing begins the following morning at 8.30am with prize-giving parties to follow each day at different resorts.

Katathani Beach Resort and Spa, Mom Tri's Boathouse, Phuket Orchid resort and Spa, Centara Grand Beach resort Phuket and the Kata Beach Resort and Spa will be nightly hosts.
