Celebrating Kathu's contribution to Phuket for the first time

Kathu Culture to August 7: Photo Special

Wednesday, August 5, 2009
KATHU is holding a Culture Street festival from 5pm on Wednesday August 5 to August 7. It's the first time Kathu has celebrated its own beginnings, and perhaps that's a heartening sign.

The mayor, Chaianan Suttikul, says: ''This part of Phuket has lots of culture and local wisdom, and we thought it was about time we told that story.''

There's a new generation that may not be aware of the history of the real heart of Phuket, even if perhaps they grew up nearby.

''It's about food, how people worked in the old days, about the Chinese temple . . . which is in the case of Kathu is about 200 years old. Perhaps it was even the first one on the island.''

The fun and food fair, just down the road, opposite the Tessaban kathu, began on August 4 and runs through to the Queen's birthday on August 12.

The two events, a bit of local culture mixed with plenty to eat and treats for the children, as well as a multitude of stalls selling items at low prices, complement each other nicely.

The Culture Street and fair will open daily 5pm to 10pm.
