Phuket's 2008 King's Cup is classed by many as the best ever

Phuket King's Cup Regatta, November 28-December 5

Thursday, June 11, 2009
NEW classes and a different structure will be introduced for the King's Cup Regatta off Phuket this year, primarily to encourage younger sailors and older vessels to hit the water.

A surge in sailing around Thailand has seen juniors taking up the Optimist especially. Organisers plan to add a competitive class so young sailors can hone their skills.

Thai and expat junior sailors are active in Samui and Hua Hin. Phuket has two sailing clubs with youth sailors, and Pattaya is home to Thailand's largest Optimist fleets.

With the support of the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy, and initial feedback from yacht clubs around the country, the organisers hope to see a good turnout in the Optimist Class.

Organisers are also working towards having a fleet of Hobies return to the waters off Phuket. Discussions are underway with a number of Phuket hotels and also the official Thailand Hobie representatives, Bluewater Sports, about starting an inter-hotel Hobie competition for Phuket hotels and resorts at the regatta.

Race Management Director Simon James says Class Championships, where an individual class or association could join the regatta and hold their National or World Championships at the same time, can now be incorporated.

Another addition will be the Modern Classic Class, which according to Mr James is ''to encourage the less young yachts that have sailed in may of the past regattas to rejoin the regatta.''

Changes are planned for the Bareboat Class, possibly adding a number of divisions. With the large number of one-design, near one-design, and same manufacturer boats, organisers are considering to have a variety of divisions within the class, and at the same time remove the Sunsail One-Design Class and make it a division in the Bareboat Class.

The 23rd King's Cup is set for November 28 to December 5 off Kata beach.

Under the patronage of HM The King, the regatta is organised by the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organising Committee.
