What Phuketwan says:
IF WE WERE forced to go out one New Year's night on Phuket, find ourselves plastered, lose our virginity sometime before dawn and then lose our memory sometime after dawn, Ella is one of the few places we'd enjoy waking up. As the fug of Patong lifted - well up to a point, a Patong fug is a fairly soft-solid thing, a bit like a child's blowup swim ring - we'd stagger downstairs in our favorite fairy pajamas, with a santa hat still on our head, order up big, then wait for our memory and our virginity to return. Nobody would cast a second glance at the fairy pyjamas, the child's blowup swim ring or the santa hat. The wait staff, being attentive in every respect, might choose a slightly more mellow music set, perhaps swapping AC-DC for Sade. Nobody would bat an eyelid if, instead of eating the eggs benedict, it appeared to take the shape of our childhood teddy bear, thought to have been burned in an incinerator on the very day we had to head to school for the first time, and we decided to snuggle it with our nose. Actually Ella is not really like that. It's a splendid place of great style and substance, New Patong beats Old Patong. But even if the old days - and the old nights - lingered on, Ella would still be a great place for breakfast, whatever time you came around.
How to find it: Down one of those sois south of Soi Bangla, Ella is a modern delight for eating or drinking, or combining both with care and consideration.
Parking: Along beach road, if you manage to find a space among the car hirers. Not as hard to find as it was once. Easier in low season.
