Fans young and old flocked to check out the north's new windmill

Crepes Village II Opening: Photo Special

Sunday, July 26, 2009
A CHEERING sign came last night for Phuket when a crowd of new and old fans turned out for the opening of an unusual restaurant at Cherng Talay.

Many people have been wondering about the strange looking building going up near the turn-off to Laguna Phuket. What the heck could it be?

Now all is clear. It's a faux windmill and it signposts Crepes Village II.

Note that 'II'.

In troubled times, to have a Phuket brand expanding from its start-up branch in Rawai to the north of the island is a promising sign.

While the windmill may not actually do much turning, it certainly makes for creating brand awareness fast.

The international appeal of the savory-sweet French delight has been adapted to mix with Thai flavors and freshness.

Curry crepes?

You bet, all washed down with a glass or two of cider, if that's your tipple.

For Frederic Lavorel, it's a logical extension of the family business back in France, connected with crepes-making equipment and ingredients, to his new home in Phuket.

His wife, Srijan Khosarat, created the menu and does a lot of the preparation, and other friends have helped with the windmill and its surrounjdings.

As the ancient adage says (and it was probably invented by a Dutch mill owner): 'It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good'.
